Nobel prize won by Briton written off in his teens by a science teacher

An interesting story in the Guardian suggests that Nobel Prize winner Sir John Gurdon was not the best student and the teacher had entirely different perception of the pupil.

According to his Eton schoolmaster, the 15-year-old Gurdon did not stand out as a potential scientist. Writing in 2006, Gurdon quoted a school report as saying: "I believe Gurdon has ideas about becoming a scientist; on his present showing this is quite ridiculous; if he can't learn simple biological facts, he would have no chance of doing the work of a specialist, and it would be a sheer waste of time, both on his part and of those who would have to teach him."

That year, Gurdon scored the lowest mark for biology in his year at Eton. "Out of 250 people, to come bottom of the bottom form is quite something, and in a way the most remarkable achievement I could have been said to make," he said.

A negative report by a teacher is not end of the world. And I can share many stories from Kabirwala where students have performed well against the odds.

Pakistan Supreme Court and democracy

An interesting article written by Justice Markandey Katju former Judge, Supreme Court of India. 

 I regret to say that the Pakistani Supreme Court, particularly its Chief Justice, has been showing utter lack of restraint. This is not expected of superior courts. In fact the court and its Chief Justice have been playing to the galleries for long. It has clearly gone overboard and flouted all canons of constitutional jurisprudence.

The Constitution establishes a delicate balance of power, and each of the three organs of the state -- the legislature, the executive and the judiciary – must respect each other and not encroach into each other’s domain, otherwise the system cannot function. It seems to me that the Pakistani Supreme Court has lost its balance and gone berserk. If it does not now come to its senses I am afraid the day is not far off when the Constitution will collapse, and the blame will squarely lie with the court, and particularly its Chief Justice.

A religious teacher tortures kids for plucking flowers

A friend has shared gruesome news and I am speechless.

Three kids named (Aqsa 6 years old, Aafia 4 years old and Junaid 5 years old) were returning from Jamia Farooqia (a religious seminary at Adda Bara Meel) after their religious lessons. Pleased with their performance at school: the kids plucked flowers from seminary as a token of respect and a gift to their school teacher.

As punishment for plucking flowers, seminary teacher Asghar Ali Roharr, crossed all human limits. The blood could be seen pouring from the backs of poor kids.

Let’s appreciate Jamia Farooqia and reward it for hiring tolerant teachers. Please note that religious institutions’ are supposed to spread tolerance in society, and behavior of its teacher shouldn’t go unpunished.

Mela without fun

There is a reason behind any order, and societal order for “Mela” in Kabirwala was built around fun. And today, district administration has banned most of the activities in the name of security. Responsible act with irresponsibility written on it: I can’t guarantee the security thus I will ban it is an “impotent” mindset.

Societies flourish and people gel at the events like this. Solitude and loneliness breed vulnerabilities which in turn then produce introverts. Without play grounds, parks and social events like Mela: societies only produce un-healthy, illiterate sociopaths.

Hats off to all those involved in today’s’ decision.

Robbers’ gang arrested

The police claimed to have busted a five-member gang of robbers and recovered goods worth Rs600,000 stolen from warehouses of Utility Stores Corporation (USC), Kabirwala.

Acting on a tip-off, the police party intercepted three trucks (C-165, ZP-3853 and C- 3278). On searching them, the police recovered huge quantity of cooking oil and vegetable ghee stolen from the USC warehouses in Kabirwala and arrested five robbers identified as Asif Dawood, Mohammad Adil, Jamil Ahmed, Shamraiz Hussain and Tahir Masood.

Police sources said the accused were trying to smuggle the goods to Peshawar. A case was registered against the accused while the confiscated goods handed over to the USC authorities.

Flood in Ravi, Sutlej: 17 villages near Mian Channu inundated

Discharge at Head Islam in River Sutlej near Vehari is expected to rise to 71,000 cusec by Thursday evening. Several villages and fields in the areas along the river are expected to be inundated. Water level is likely to rise further in the coming days.

The flood in River Ravi has so far deluged 17 villages including Dalwan, Chishtian, Hashim Chakreeb, Jungle Seet and Bhopri in Mian Channu. Some of the villagers have alleged that not openning the gates of Head Sidhnai (in Kabirwala) could have saved them by causing water level in the river to fall but this was not done.

Sad times

I am still sad on the demise of Nine family members who died in road accident. 

According to police a van, carrying family members, which was heading towards airport to see off a lady family member leaving for Umrah, collided head-on with a speeding truck coming from opposite direction at Chawan Bridge, near Kabirwala. As a result of collision nine people, all of the same family, were killed on the spot while 13 others including women and children sustained injuries.

4 injured in firing on passenger bus

At least four persons were injured after robbers opened fire at a passenger bus here in Kabirwala on Saturday morning. According to police, armed dacoits signaled to stop a Sargodha bound passenger bus coming from Multan at Jhang Road near Adda Nabipur area of Kabirwala. The injured passengers were shifted to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Kabirwala where according to hospital sources condition of all the passengers was out of danger.

Zahoor's Short Stories book

Now, I have heard that Zahoor ul Haq's short stories book is in the process of publication. The book will be named "Sakoot", based on the leading afsana.

I can not tell you the exact date of publication, but can promise to share his latest Afsana "Kahani mujh sey rooth gaye hey" next week.

The Cold Start doctrine

According to leaked documents, India’s contingency program to attack program is named Cold Start. The Cold Start doctrine was announced in April 2004 by the BJP-led government that was replaced shortly thereafter by the Manmohan Singh government, which has not since publicly embraced Cold Start.

The Cold Start doctrine explained…

Cold Start attacks could begin within 72 hours after the attack order has been given, and would be led by armored spearheads launched from prepared forward positions in Punjab and Rajasthan. As described, the plan emphasizes speed and overwhelming firepower: armored formations and accompanying infantry would advance into eastern Pakistan with limited goals in terms of distance and in terms of duration. Although the plan reportedly has a significant air support component, it is unclear to us how much joint versus parallel planning has taken place.

A positive attribute of Cold Start from the Indian perspective is that the short 72-hour time period between decision and attack could shield the GOI from international pressure to refrain from taking military action against Pakistan.

So the people of Kabirwala, though cold war is dead yet the threat of Cold Start still looms on our heads.

Hamid Yar Hiraj given Rs 6 bn plot for Rs71.6m

The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, on Friday summoned the Capital Development Authority (CDA) chairman to appear before the court, along with record, on Monday and explain as to how he allotted a 26.5 kanal plot in the Diplomatic Enclave to Hamid Yar Harraj, Member of Parliamentary Accountability Committee, and the chairman of the Earthquake Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Authority (Erra), in violation of rules and policy in December 2007, when he was working as a minister of state.

Hamid Yar Harraj has also been issued a notice for Dec 13. The CJ took suo motu notice on a report telecast by a private TV channel stating that the CDA had allotted a plot measuring 26.5 kanals to Hamid Yar Harraj for a school in the Diplomatic Enclave, Islamabad, in violation of the laid down rules and procedure.

According to the telecast, the Master Plan of Islamabad has been altered without the approval of the cabinet, and 37 kanals plot has been changed into a 19 kanal plot. Thereafter, the 19 kanal land worth Rs 6 billion was allotted to Hamid Yar Harraj for just Rs71.632 million, whereas 18 kanal land has been given for school in the name of green belt.
